FIFA World Cup 2026: Format, Final, Winners and Awards
The FIFA World Cup 2026 brought a larger field, an extra knockout round and three host countries into one tournament. Spain finished as champions, but understanding this edition means looking beyond the final score: the format changed the route through the competition and gave more national teams a place on football’s biggest stage.

Where the tournament was played
The competition ran across Canada, Mexico and the United States. Its opening fixture took place in Mexico City, and the final was staged at New York New Jersey Stadium. For supporters, a tournament spread across several countries required extra care with venue names, travel plans and time zones. A match’s host-city time and its starting time in Pakistan could fall on different calendar dates.
When returning to a match archive, keep three items together: the teams, the date and the venue. That small habit helps distinguish a group-stage meeting from a knockout match and prevents an old fixture announcement from being mistaken for a future game.
How the 48-team format worked
The teams were divided into 12 groups of four. Each side played three group matches. The first two teams in each group qualified, together with the eight best third-placed teams. That produced a 32-team knockout field.
The elimination route then ran through the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, with a separate third-place match. A finalist therefore played eight matches. This extra round mattered: surviving the groups was the beginning of a longer elimination journey.
The third-place route also changed how fans followed the group stage. A team’s position within its own group did not tell the entire story; a third-placed side also had to be compared with teams finishing third elsewhere. Read the official table rather than assuming every third-place finish meant elimination.
Spain’s title and the final against Argentina
Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time on 19 July. The game remained scoreless through 90 minutes before Ferran Torres struck in the 106th minute. The victory delivered Spain’s second men’s World Cup title.
A narrow final should be read as a complete contest, not simply a highlight of its winning goal. Supporters can ask how each team protected central space, where attacks stalled and how substitutions changed the options late in the match. These are useful questions for a replay; they do not require inventing statistics or treating possession alone as proof of superiority.
The award winners
Rodri received the Golden Ball, Unai Simón the Golden Glove and Pau Cubarsí the Young Player Award. France’s Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot with ten goals. These prizes recognise different contributions: overall tournament performance, goalkeeping, young-player impact and goalscoring.
Comparing a goalkeeper with a striker only by goals misses the goalkeeper’s job. Likewise, a midfielder can influence a match through positioning and passing without providing its most shareable moment. Use the awards as a starting point for watching different roles rather than collapsing them into a single popularity contest.
What made the expanded field worth exploring
Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan appeared at the finals for the first time. Their participation is a useful reminder that a World Cup is also a collection of national football stories. Start with the teams you know, then choose one unfamiliar side and follow its squad, opponents and path through the competition.
For a fuller picture, read a match report beside its scorecard or statistics page, and watch the extended highlights when available. Separate the confirmed result from your interpretation of why it happened. A clear explanation of a turning point is more useful than an unsupported claim that a side was simply “unlucky”.
